Empathetic

about

“Why be what you don't want?” JClays asks at the end of his song “Empathetic”. The track asks the listener to see empathy from a completely different perspective. ADOT THE GOD teams up with the up-and-coming artist to deliver a stellar, laid-back beat that flows effortlessly behind JClay’s uplifting batch of verses. Each of JClays songs emanates a raw candor that ends up leaving the viewer with a new, more positive thought process than the one they had prior, and “Empathetic” is no exception.

Initially, JClay appears almost condescending in his nature, mocking the word empathy and what it stands for. For him, empathy alludes to a sharing of weakness, which just feels wrong. He’s here to lift people out of their personal swamps, not wallow in the mud with them. Feeling sorry for yourself or another person, won’t get anyone anywhere.

He doesn’t feel for you, because he feels great; and so should you. That is the energy people are meant to stand together in, and the energy JClay brings with this latest single. It's an eye-opening shifting of a word we never questioned, all told in the form of an encouraging, but soul-filled tune. “Empathetic” is a lowkey track meant for times when honest advice feels difficult to give. Even though the truth can hurt, you aren’t helping anyone by not telling it.

lyrics

If I met you at your level I'd be sad too
Then they'll be no one to remind us what we can laugh through
They say misery loves company, well how you think the happy move
If you want me to lift you up then, you know that I'll be happy to

But what I ain't gone do
Is sit wit you
And wipe yo party poopin' booty
When you choose to view so cruelly
This here instant filled wit beauty
Take a step back, view it truly
There's no need to be so moody
I will never understand you choosing this when you're the choosy

I guess I'm not empathetic
What
I said that I'm not pathetic
Oh
And neither are you

Now you want to wish me pain
Just so your point is proved
But I'll still show you forgiveness
Cuz you know I love this mood
There is nothing that's more peaceful than some peace
So it's my only food
You can join my happiness or
Just be an unhappy fool

But what I ain't gone do is uh
Repeat myself
I think I'll trick and treat myself
Cuz I'm just going to be myself
And laugh until I pee myself
Like l-m-n-o
And I'm still blessin in this vessel straight yessin
While I'm telling you no
I don't understand

I guess I'm not empathetic
What
I said that I'm not pathetic
Oh
And neither are you

There's a strong push right now to be more empathetic
So I asked what is empathy
And I was told
It's appreciating one's vulnerability
So I looked up vulnerability
And I realized
No one is ever vulnerable
That's a false belief
That's identifying with something that you are not
You are perfect
You are wise
You are strong
You are amazing
You are kind
You are lovable
You are worthy
You are a creator
Don't ever identify with someone else's pain
Don't even identify with pain
You are so much stronger than that
When you identify with it
You make it your own
And then you are that
Why be what you don't want
Don't be empathetic
Be love
